Some Republican candidates, meanwhile, seem to be softening their positions. And political analysts say it\u2019s part of a larger trend playing out nationwide, up and down the ballot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe politics of abortion and reproductive health can get voters to participate at higher rates,\u201d said <strong>David McCuan<\/strong>, a political science professor at <strong>Sonoma State University<\/strong>. \u201cRepublicans have to moderate their stance if they\u2019re going to be in the battle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After all, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/womens-health-policy\/poll-finding\/kff-health-tracking-poll-september-2024-harris-v-trump-on-key-health-care-issues\/\">polls show most voters<\/a> support restoring abortion rights overturned in 2022 by the Supreme Court. Aggressive ads are going up in competitive districts where Democrats see an opportunity to take control of the House by engaging voters who might not vote straight-ticket \u2014 or at all.<\/p>\n<p>In New York, Democrat <strong>Josh Riley <\/strong>blasted Republican incumbent<strong> Marcus J. Molinaro<\/strong> in a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iQu9fvWaVoY\"> 30-second ad<\/a> for voting against abortion rights <strong>13<\/strong> times. Next door in New Jersey, Democratic hopeful <strong>Sue Altman<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/suealtman\/status\/1833514995826434393\">called out<\/a> Republican opponent <strong>Tom Kean Jr.<\/strong> for a \u201csecret antiabortion agenda.\u201d And in California, Democrat <strong>Will Rollins<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/WillRollinsCA\/status\/1836843771486507461\">denounced <\/a>Republican rival \u201c<strong>Ken Calvert<\/strong> and MAGA extremists\u201d for backing a national abortion ban.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in March, shortly after her primary, Rep.<strong> Michelle Steel<\/strong> (R-Calif.) removed her support for a blanket abortion ban \u2014 the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/431\/cosponsors?q=%7B%22cosponsor-state%22%3A%22Arizona%22%7D\"> Life at Conception Act<\/a> \u2014 saying it could create confusion because the bill could threaten in vitro fertilization. Following news reports about her reversal, the Orange County-area Republican <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hBuawWWVaZs\">released an ad<\/a> in which she shared that she had used IVF and reiterated her support for the procedure.<\/p>\n<p>On the campaign trail, Steel has said she<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ocregister.com\/2024\/03\/07\/michelle-steel-setting-the-record-straight-on-what-i-think-about-ivf\/\"> supports exceptions<\/a> to abortion bans in cases of rape, incest, and in which the mother\u2019s health or life is at risk, a departure from bills she previously supported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we all need to do is to make sure we look at her record, and that record is contrary to what she\u2019s putting out there in her ads,\u201d Steel\u2019s Democratic challenger, <strong>Derek Tran<\/strong>, told me.<\/p>\n<p>The Steel and Calvert campaigns told KFF Health News that their candidates oppose a national abortion ban. Calvert, who last backed a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/115th-congress\/house-bill\/36?s=9&amp;r=1&amp;q=%7B%22search%22%3A%22%5C%22Pain-Capable+Unborn+Child+Protection+Act%5C%22%22%7D\"> 20-week abortion ban in 2017<\/a>, issued a statement saying the issue is best left to states.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tim Rosales<\/strong>, a political strategist who has represented Republican candidates, said incumbents shouldn\u2019t get heat for changing their minds over time.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <strong>Rolling Stone <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-features\/don-bacon-deletes-anti-abortion-endorsements-1234991819\/\">reported in March<\/a> that Rep. <strong>Don Bacon <\/strong>(R-Neb.) had deleted antiabortion endorsements from his website. Arizona Republican incumbent Rep. <strong>David Schweikert<\/strong> said<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepDavid\/status\/1777778129483780533\"> he opposed a state abortion ban<\/a>, even though he had co-sponsored a national ban six times.<\/p>\n<p>And vice-presidential candidate <strong>JD Vance<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jbendery\/status\/1813307375509713160?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1813307375509713160%7Ctwgr%5E678ddc81f5ae3ac86aeddde2dce1d6389a2acaab%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Ftruthout.org%2Farticles%2Fj-d-vance-website-including-his-anti-abortion-views-mysteriously-disappears%2F\"> removed his antiabortion stance<\/a> from his website the month former president <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong> selected him as his running mate.<\/p>\n<p><em>This article is not available for syndication due to republishing restrictions.
