On a Sunday morning in late July, Crothall housekeeper Amari Alston couldn\u2019t open the door to a patient\u2019s room at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C. She has visited the patient the previous day and made it a point to make an early visit to this patient.\u00a0 But when the door handle wouldn\u2019t budge, she quickly realized the patient could be in serious trouble.<\/p>\n
Amari called out her name, but after getting no response \u2013 and because housekeepers are not allowed to touch patients \u2014 she raced down the hallway to find a nurse. The nurse and Amari ran to help the patient and called the hospital\u2019s Rapid Response team.<\/p>\n
Fortunately, they found the patient on the floor, but conscious and with no serious health issues. She had had fallen after trying to go to the bathroom on her own.<\/p>\n
The incident highlights the vital role housekeepers play in creating a safe\u00a0 environment for patients, as well as the importance of teamwork between the EVS staff and Nursing.<\/p>\n\n
Amari, who is 22 years old and joined Crothall just over two months before this incident, has been recognized for her outstanding work throughout the hospital for her work. She won the EVS GEM of the Month award as well as Novant\u2019s \u201cGreat Catch\u201d award, which recognized workers who prevent harm to patients. To demonstrate their appreciation, the Novant leadership attended a recent EVS staff meeting to express their gratitude for her timely work.<\/p>\n
