Matthew Phillips doesn\u2019t consider himself a hero. To him, caring for patients and supporting his team are simply part of doing his job.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But twice, when patients needed help, Matthew\u2019s quick thinking and willingness to act made all the difference. While cleaning a room at a Pennsylvania hospital, he noticed the patient in medical distress and immediately ran to get help. His actions helped ensure the patient received the urgent medical care they needed and ultimately helped to save their life.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Matthew is a housekeeper with Crothall Healthcare. His colleagues know him for his strong work ethic, kindness, and commitment to patients. In 2025, he was named the Regional GEM of the Year and has received several other associate awards for his exceptional work ethic. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

This fall, Matthew\u2019s story and accomplishments will reach an even larger audience when he is featured on <\/span>All Access with Andy Garcia<\/span>, a public television documentary series hosted by actor Andy Garcia. Matthew said that he is grateful for the opportunity and truly loves the work he does at the hospital.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI like working with patients, my co-workers, and the managers, and cleaning the patients\u2019 rooms,\u201d he says. \u201cI like putting smiles on the patients\u2019 faces before they leave the hospital.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Matthew takes his responsibility to patients seriously.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI like making all of the bosses proud and making the nurses proud of me. I don\u2019t take anything lightly. If a patient asks, I will get a nurse right away. This year, while I was cleaning, I saved a life, and in July of last year I saved a life.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Matthew joined Crothall through Via of the Lehigh Valley, a local nonprofit human services agency that works with individuals with intellectual disabilities.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI feel that Via is the best thing that ever happened to me in my life,\u201d he says.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Although Matthew works independently, Liz Altemose, a Via Program Coordinator, serves as his job coach and provides support when needed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMatt reflects the true impact of inclusive employment,\u201d she says. \u201cHe\u2019s dependable, respected, and he\u2019s always ready to step up. He has demonstrated that by saving lives at critical moments.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe shows us that inclusion strengthens our workplaces; that character matters. His extraordinary impact often comes from simply doing the right thing, every single day.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Michelle Cordoue, Director of Environmental Services, Matthew\u2019s work ethic is exemplary.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI wish I had 100 Matthews,\u201d she says. \u201cHe always has a kind word and makes everyone happy.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For Matthew, being part of the Crothall team is about more than earning a paycheck. He takes pride in supporting his coworkers just as they support him.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe whole Crothall team is very supportive of me. If I ever need any help with anything on the job, they are there. It means a whole lot to me to go above and beyond with my employees. If they help me with the discharge, I try to help them out by taking the garbage and linen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey all have my best interest. I respect my coworkers and my bosses. It\u2019s about teamwork and we all work together.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Matthew\u2019s story is a powerful example of how inclusive employment can create opportunities for associates to thrive and how one person\u2019s commitment to doing the right thing can make a lasting difference for patients, coworkers, and an entire hospital community.<\/span><\/p>\n
