{"id":8646,"date":"2025-10-01T20:47:46","date_gmt":"2025-10-01T20:47:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/medical-article.com\/?p=8646"},"modified":"2025-10-01T20:47:46","modified_gmt":"2025-10-01T20:47:46","slug":"honoring-tom-racobaldo-crothall-ceo-to-retire-after-decades-of-leadership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medical-article.com\/?p=8646","title":{"rendered":"Honoring Tom Racobaldo: Crothall CEO to Retire After Decades of Leadership"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span>Honoring Tom Racobaldo: Crothall CEO to Retire After Decades of Leadership<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In 1979,\u00a0Tom\u00a0Racobaldo\u00a0refinished hospital floors and cleaned patient rooms\u00a0as a Crothall management trainee.\u00a0Six months later,\u00a0he received his first assignment:\u00a0managing\u00a0a\u00a050-bed hospital\u00a0with 10 employees in northeast Philadelphia.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Forty-six years later,\u00a0Racobaldo\u00a0will retire as Crothall\u2019s chief executive officer.\u00a0Well-known for his humility,\u00a0Racobaldo\u00a0will complete\u00a0nearly a\u00a0half-century in the business at the top of his game, having helped build a\u00a0company that\u00a0now supports more than\u00a01,000 hospitals and has grown to\u00a0approximately\u00a0$2.2 billion\u00a0in annual\u00a0revenue.<\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span>Compass One Healthcare\u2019s\u00a0Chief Executive Officer, Bobby Kutteh, says\u00a0Racobaldo\u2019s\u00a0steady<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>demeanor\u00a0and\u00a0determination to grow the business have built\u00a0a unique culture while achieving exceptional financial results.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cTom\u00a0had done it all,\u201d says Kutteh. \u201cHe\u2019s walked in the shoes of our operators, starting as a night supervisor.\u00a0He\u2019s\u00a0also developed\u00a0our current leaders into\u00a0a\u00a0strong team\u00a0that will shape our future.\u00a0His consistency, capabilities, and character have set the standard for leadership in our company.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Racobaldo\u00a0shared\u00a0with us\u00a0his\u00a0key insights on\u00a0a\u00a0variety of topics, ranging from\u00a0his own humble beginning,\u00a0lessons he has learned\u00a0along the way, advice for young employees starting,\u00a0and keys to how the company grew its business:<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Early Years<\/span><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Racobaldo\u2019s\u00a0road to success was temporarily waylaid a few years into his career. After\u00a0working for the company for several years, he\u00a0moved\u00a0to the West Coast to take\u00a0a\u00a0sales position. However, the company was\u00a0sold\u00a0twice and underwent several changes, leaving him concerned about its future.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Fortunately,\u00a0Graeme Crothall, the founder\u00a0of Crothall,\u00a0decided to start a new\u00a0Crothall\u00a0company\u00a0in 1991. He\u00a0called\u00a0Racobaldo\u00a0in 1993 and asked him to\u00a0move back to the East Coast to\u00a0become a Senior Regional Director of Operations. While the new Crothall was significantly smaller\u00a0than its competitors, it enabled\u00a0Racobaldo\u00a0to assume a pivotal leadership role that was crucial to his career.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span><br \/>\n<span>\u201cAs a start-up company, you do everything. I was writing policies and procedures,\u00a0proposals for new business, and making\u00a0new business\u00a0presentations.\u00a0And I was on the road\u00a0just building the business because\u00a0when the company is small,\u00a0every account is so precious.\u00a0It\u00a0was a lot of\u00a0hard\u00a0work,\u00a0and I thrived, but it was\u00a0probably the\u00a0toughest part of my career,\u201d said\u00a0Racobaldo.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>Much like today, the new Crothall succeeded by differentiating itself from its competitors.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Keys to Crothall\u2019s Success.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While other service providers may lump all hospital support services under one management team, Racobaldo says Crothall succeeds because it\u2019s a separate unit of Compass One Healthcare. By focusing all its resources on a separate line of service, Crothall has outperformed its competitors. <\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThere\u2019s just no question we deliver far better results in our support service divisions than our competitors. It\u2019s the specialization piece, having our resources focused on each service line, and it\u2019s the quality of people we\u2019re able to attract.\u201d<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span>He says the Compass One Healthcare business model also gives Crothall an edge in operational leadership. \u201cOur leaders have grown up in the business, and they know it inside and out. I have eight division presidents who, on average, have probably 20 years of experience. To me, there\u2019s no better formula for success.\u201d<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>People First Management Style.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Mike Villani, newly appointed Crothall CEO, says Racobaldo\u2019s \u201cpeople first\u201d approach will have a significant impact on his own leadership style.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span>Racobaldo\u00a0believes<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>that successful managers must\u00a0strike a balance between\u00a0compassion\u00a0for their people and\u00a0identifying\u00a0the right moments to help them improve. He believes in treating everyone with respect, regardless of their title.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Advice for Young\u00a0Managers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Racobaldo\u00a0understands\u00a0that in-unit\u00a0managers are often under tremendous stress, and he refers to the\u00a0operations manager\u00a0position as \u201cthe toughest job in the business.\u201d<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThey are the front line of leadership who manage the workers. But they get directives and complaints from everywhere:\u00a0from their supervisors, from Nursing and other clients, and they also need to train and supervise their people.\u201d<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He says the job amounts to boot camp for anyone taking on that role.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For those who want to advance, he says\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0crucial to ensure you are clear with your boss\u00a0about your\u00a0career aspirations.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cDon\u2019t just assume they know you want to do more. The fact that some people\u00a0like what they do, and they\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0want to do more.\u00a0Most people coming into\u00a0leadership want to do more. My\u00a0advice\u00a0is to communicate\u00a0effectively and take ownership of your career.\u00a0Don\u2019t\u00a0leave it\u00a0up\u00a0to somebody else\u00a0to decide.\u201d<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>What He Will Miss Most About Crothall.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span><span>First, the\u00a0camaraderie.\u00a0I enjoy developing people and just interacting with really good people.\u00a0I\u2019ll\u00a0also miss the competition. I\u00a0think most people who are good at business have a\u00a0competitive streak in them.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI\u2019ll\u00a0also miss the culture that Bobby created.\u00a0Before Bobby became CEO, we were a company focused on tasks and meeting\u00a0objectives, and there\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0much emphasis on the people.\u00a0\u00a0And Bobby turned that around 180 degrees. He made people realize there can be balance in your life.\u201d<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>His\u00a0Legacy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span><span>People ask,\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0your legacy? My answer is,\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0proud of what\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0accomplished,\u00a0but\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0also pleased that the company has planned well for its future.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe have a whole new team of senior leaders, and\u00a0they\u2019ve\u00a0got a\u00a0long\u00a0runway.\u00a0The most important thing to me\u00a0is knowing this company continues to thrive with new leadership.
