Crothall’s Carolyn Mixon Celebrates 60 Years in Healthcare

One of Crothall’s longest-running associates recently celebrated her 60th work anniversary in the healthcare industry.

Carolyn Mixon, Environmental Services operations manager at Walker Baptist Medical Center in Jasper, Alabama, began working as a housekeeper in 1965. She started her career at the former Peoples Hospital and moved to Walker Baptist when it opened in 1980.

To celebrate this milestone, her friends and co-workers presented the 80-year-old with a certificate and a plaque, and treated her to dinner at a local restaurant. She also received a proclamation from Jasper Mayor Gary Cowen, recognizing her service to the community.

“Carolyn Mixon has devoted 60 years to the healthcare profession, demonstrating exceptional service, leadership, and care to countless patients and families throughout our community,” the proclamation read.

How It Began

Carolyn recalls beginning work as a housekeeper at age 20.

“My cousin was the only housekeeper at the time. I started out working part-time, and when she needed time off, I became a full-time employee.”

Mixon was featured as a “Healthcare Hero” in a local magazine for her work during the COVID-19 pandemic. She says that working in the healthcare industry all these years has been a blessing.

“Serving within healthcare gives me great pleasure to be able to help every patient that enters the doors of Walker Baptist,” she said in 2020.

Being in the healthcare environment allows me to provide a sense of hope and faith to the patients. Choosing to work in healthcare has allowed me to fulfill my civic duty within the Walker County community.

Her supervisor, Shanta Henderson, says Carolyn oversees the team when she is on vacation or needed elsewhere, and that her work ethic and her ability to treat every patient with care are the reasons for her success.

“She has worked hard and worked her way up, from housekeeper to operations manager,” says Henderson. ” She is relentless, she doesn’t know how to stop working, and will keep going and going. She’s definitely the Energizer Bunny.”

Carolyn enjoys several aspects of her responsibilities, though her favorite is helping new housekeepers learn the correct way to clean patient rooms and other areas of the hospital from the start.

“She does a phenomenal job training our new associates,” says Henderson. “Our team leads would definitely say she drives them hard, but most importantly, she is there for them.”

Carolyn is heavily involved with her church and is well known for her generosity, donating money to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and other nonprofit organizations. “If you call her on the phone, she’s going to donate something,” says Henderson.

Carolyn attributes her career longevity to Crothall and remains dedicated to helping patients and visitors at the hospital.

“Crothall is an amazing company and has been very good to me and the team. I think it’s an awesome company to work for,” she says.

And the key to her success?

“Simply keeping a smile on the patients and visitors while cleaning their rooms and praying with the team,” says Carolyn.
