In this latest edition of Perspectives from the Healthcare Economist, Jason Shafrin (FTI Consulting and Mann School of Pharmacy, University of Southern California) examines how AI is beginning to reshape health economics and outcomes research (HEOR), from evidence generation and literature reviews to data analysis and payer decision-making. Ahead of ISPOR 2026 (May 17–20, 2026, Philadelphia) where AI and evidence generation are expected to feature prominently in discussions across the HEOR community, Shafrin explores whether AI represents a threat to the profession or a catalyst for its evolution. He argues that while AI will change how evidence is generated, accessed, and interpreted, the need for robust HEOR expertise and high-quality evidence will remain central to healthcare decision-making.
